The Menace of Speedhumps and Potholes
06 January 2020
With the recent downpours up and down the country, potholes are on the rise but it’s not just them causing damage to our cars, it’s also speedhumps. Research by InsuretheGap has found that one in four drivers have had their car damaged by a pothole or a speedhump. The figure was even higher in urban areas with one in three suffering damage.
With such a large number of vehicles being damaged by hazardous road conditions, more should be done to maintain our streets. However, with the 39% of drivers complaining about damage to their vehicles, a staggering 55% said they thought their complaint was ignored. This could be due to funding cuts as the Transport select committee reported earlier this year that there had been a 25% drop in local government revenue funding.
As roads are less likely to be repaired it is good to know how best to manage potholes on the roads. Take it slow when approaching potential potholes as this will help minimise damage but also allow you to react more quickly. Hitting one, especially at speed, may force you to veer off your path so keeping a firm grip on the steering wheel will help you maintain control. Finally, braking may seem like the natural reaction after hitting a pothole however this puts extra stress on the suspension and may result in further damage.
