Preparing your fleet for RDE2

Preparing your fleet for RDE2

As part of ongoing vehicle emission changes in the UK and Europe, all new cars sold from 1st January 2021 must be RDE2 compliant.

RDE stands for Real Driving Emissions and it is a mandatory test that all new petrol and diesel cars must undergo that includes elements of real world driving to form the emission results of the vehicle in different environments.  This new data might specifically impact the MPG, CO2 and NOx figures of the cars you choose.

The impact of this for UK fleet operators will be for those drivers choosing a new diesel car. HMRC announced previously that any diesel car meeting the RDE2 standard would forego the current 4% surcharge in benefit-in-kind, thereby making diesels slightly more tax efficient and saving the drivers in BIK and employer in NI contribution as the percentage factor will be lower too.

As we head into the final quarter of 2020, more manufacturers are launching RDE2 compliant diesel vehicles.  You will find the current list here.

Your drivers should be aware of these changes, especially if they are looking to order a new diesel car in the coming months as it will be beneficial for them to choose and RDE2 compliant car.

Marshall Leasing can help by producing driver specific lists of RDE2 compliant vehicles within a particular grade or update your existing policy with RDE2 compliant diesels that your drivers can choose from.  For existing diesel vehicles approaching contract end date we are able to consider extending the contact on an informal basis until an RDE2 replacement is available to quote on and order.

As employers, you will also need to be aware of the need to record the correct coding in your annual P11D return for these drivers.  Any RDE2 diesel car will be coded as a letter F as shown in the table below.

Please note: Euro 6d diesel cars have been around for some years now, however, all should be coded as conventional diesel, letter D, as only RDE2 compliant diesels can be coded as the letter F which conforms to Euro 6d Temp 2 certification.

If you have any questions about these changes, or about which cars are best for your colleagues or fleet, please get in touch with your dedicated sales contact or account manager, email us at info@marshall-leasing.co.uk  or call us on 01480 414541.
