Drivers are switching off ADAS safety systems

Drivers are switching off ADAS safety systems

Autoglass surveyed 1,400 drivers with advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) enabled vehicles and found that 41% intentionally switch off safety systems such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB), which are now a common feature in new cars and vans, or lane departure warning systems, whilst driving.

Almost a quarter (24%) of ADAS enabled vehicle drivers said they had not been provided with any information about the importance of safety features.

Clearly, ADAS can help keep drivers and passengers safe, but only if the technology is switched on and operating correctly.

Neil Atherton, sales and markting director at Augoglass said, “ADAS is becoming more and more common in UK fleets and so more should be done to educate drivers, to encourage positive behaviour and ensure the systems are being used correctly.

“Fleet managers have a responsibility to not only help drivers understand the benefits of these systems but also to review their supply chain to ensure the vehicles are being maintained to the correct standards.”

Almost half (55%) of those surveyed were unaware that ADAS cameras and sensors need to be recalibrated to manufacturer standards if they have been impacted by a windscreen replacement.

The government is analysing the results of a consultation to determine whether it is safe to implement Automated Lane Keeping Systems (AKLS) on UK motorways. But, if drivers are still unfamiliar with basic safety systems in ADAS vehicles, it is paramount that more education and training is provided before introducing more complex technology.
