The Wave of Gritters Approaches
10 February 2020
As snow and ice make more frequent appearances on our roads, fleets of gritters will soon be on their way. Before we look into what this means for your usual journeys, lets first get to know the gritters a bit more. ‘Gritter Thunberg’ is on a mission to save our roads, ‘Snowel Gallagher’ likes the limelight and ‘Snowbi-Gone Kenobi’ uses the force to distribute the grit. Confused yet? Well the city of Manchester decided to let the public choose the names of their eight new gritters so they could bring a little bit of cheer as well as grit to the roads.
In addition to bringing a smile to your face, the gritters’ main job is to reduce ice and snow on our roads making them safer for us to drive on. However, to grit our roads they must use them which means you could find yourself stuck behind one. Knowing what to do when behind a gritter or passing it can be the difference between an expensive repair bill and not.
At Marshall Leasing we understand that keeping your fleet safe is the number one priority which is why we have put together a few tips on how to deal with those gritters. When following them make sure to leave plenty of space between the two of you especially at junctions. This will help reduce the chance of damage caused by the salt crystals being sprayed out from the gritter.
When overtaking or passing the machines it may be tempting to swerve to try and avoid the spray. However, because they are gritting the whole road it is impossible for you to safely avoid this and by taking evasive action only increases the chance of an accident.
At Marshall Leasing we are always on hand to offer advice and guidance around the safety of you fleet. If you would like to find out more about us visit our “Driver Services” page here, or call us directly on 01480 414541.
