Car Brands to sell 15% Purely Electric Vehicles Within A Decade

The charity Global Action Plan (GAP) has called on the government to enforce a minimum 15% sale quota of purely electric vehicles for UK car manufacturers.

As it stands, car brands must meet a CO2-based target, or fleet emissions target. However, the public has expressed its concern and desire for affordable electric vehicles. Only 1% of vehicles in the UK are purely electric, which equates to 100,000 vehicles. This might seem like a reasonable number, until it is compared with the 32 million other, non-electric vehicles in the UK. Furthermore, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, fully electric cars currently make up 4.7% of total sales.

Between the beginning of January 2020 and the end of July 2020, 39,000 pure electric vehicles have been sold in the UK, a 112% growth year on year.

A recent survey found that 59% of families with more than one vehicle park off the road, for example using a driveway, and only use their secondary vehicle for long-distance road trips. GAP calculated that if this 59% converted to electric vehicles, it would take the number of electric vehicles in the UK up to around 5.7 million.

Global Action Plan Co-CEO, Chris Large, said “The car industry often cites the long family holiday and availability of public charge points as a major reason that drivers won’t go electric. But the facts are that for one in six cars on the road – the “second” car in 5.7m households – these are not problems and electric cars are the perfect vehicle.

“The car companies that made $600bn profit from selling diesel and petrol cars in the last decade, must be made to focus on mass producing zero emission vehicles in this decade.”
