There were 460 accidents involving e-Scooters in 2020

The Department for Transport recently released the first set of annual road casualty statistics for Great Britain which include the number of casualties from accidents involving e-Scooters.

The main points of the e-Scooter factsheet were that:

  • There were 460 accidents involving e-scooters.
  • There were 484 casualties in accidents involving e-scooters, of these 384 were e-scooters users.
  • Of the 484 casualties 1 was killed. The Department for Transport’s best estimate, after adjusting for changes in reporting by police, is that there were 128 seriously injured and 355 slightly injured.

The UK government approved regulations allowing trials of rental e-Scooters to begin from July 4 2020. Local authorities across the country set up rental schemes to provide people with an alternative method of travel during the pandemic.

Since them, many of these pilot schemes have been extended, or results have been delayed. Until this information is accessible, it is difficult to conduct a full review of the safety of rental e-Scooters.

Director of Policy and Research at IAM RoadSmart Neil Greig said, “By delaying yet again the results of the pilot schemes we have another Christmas looming where people will be buying and using a totally unregulated form of transport in the UK.

“The pilots were launched in July 2020 and are now not due to finish until March 2022, plus the time required after that for analysis and legislation – this has taken far too long in our opinion. In the meantime, the police should make it absolutely clear that anyone caught riding an e-scooter outside private land or a trial area will have their vehicle seized immediately”.
