Tips for driving an automatic in the snow

Tips for driving an automatic in the snow

Whilst it makes for a picturesque setting, snow can pose a problem for road users – particularly those driving an automatic car.

Automatic cars are at a disadvantage in icy conditions, without a manual gear box to offer the benefit of better driver control in icy conditions. Whilst some automatic vehicles may have a winter or snow mode, those that don’t may be trickier to navigate in these conditions.

Here are some safety tips for driving in the snow, which you may find helpful:

Use your vehicle controls gently

Gentle use of the acceleration, brakes and steering wheel can help to prevent the wheels from spinning over ice. Drive at a reduced speed, take corners slowly and be sure to account for a larger stopping distance - 10 times the normal recommended breaking distance is needed in snow/icy conditions.

Beware of driving over tyre tracks

Whilst it may seem logical to use the tyre tracks of another vehicle, you may find that they are pathways for compacted snow which can become icy. Generally, fresh snow has a better grip – although it may not always be possible to find fresh patches of snow, particularly on busier roads.

If you skid…

Should you find yourself skidding you may feel the urge to slam on the brakes, but this can worsen the situation. Instead, try driving into the direction of the skid (not against it) which may help you to more quickly regain control of your vehicle.

Consider investing in winter tyres

First and foremost, tyre maintenance is particularly important in cold weather. Bald or worn tyres in the snow are extremely dangerous and can result in loss of control of the vehicle and skidding. We advise that you check that your tyre tread depth before setting off.

If you live in an area that is heavily affected by snow, it may also be helpful to use snow socks or chains, which provide your tyres with extra grip.

Aside from safe driving practices, if you drive an electric vehicle you may also want to consider the effect of a temperature drop on your vehicle’s range. Here, you can find some helpful tips to make the most of EV range in snowy conditions.
