V2G technology could allow EVs to power homes

V2G technology could allow EVs to power homes

A new project, EV-elocity, which involves the universities of Nottingham and Warwick led by Cenex is using special vehicle-to-grid (V2G) chargers in various locations throughout England to gain insights into the possibility of using EV charging technology to power homes.

Funded by The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and facilitated by Innovate UK, the project is exploring the possibility of using EV batteries to store electricity and later release it back into the grid.

The researchers say that V2G technology could encourage EV uptake by allowing people to ‘monetise their investment’.

EV-elocity’s University of Nottingham lead Professor Lucelia Rodrigues said, "Cities saw a huge drop in CO2 levels during lockdowns and installing V2G technology could help to reduce emissions from transport and electricity production long-term."

It was also noted that there is a disconnect between peak times for charging between 18.00 and 20.00 and during periods where renewable energy sources such as solar panels are able to generate power.

Professor Lucelia Rodrigues added, "There is an urgent need to resolve this disconnect and find a way to increase the grid's capacity to store excess renewable power to reduce pressure on the energy system's infrastructure.

"Why invest in a battery for your home if you have a car with a battery?".

Research fellow at the University of Nottingham Dr Julie Waldron commented, "Electric vehicles could be a source of income when they're parked up.

"We know cost is a major factor deterring mass adoption of electric vehicles, but if V2G charging helps owners get a quick return on their investment, it could make purchasing electric vehicles a much more attractive option."
