New EV charging point design unveiled
03 December 2021
In September 2021, the Department for Transport (DfT) appointed the Royal College of Art (RCA) and PA Consulting to create an ‘iconic’ British electric vehicle charging point design, in hopes of it becoming ‘as recognisable as the red post box’.
A prototype was revealed by transport secretary Grant Schapps at the recent COP26 climate summit and labelled by the DfT ‘Britain’s latest iconic design’.
Most notably, the design features a distinctive circular handle which lights up when the charger is in use and is midnight blue in colour with bronze tones.
PA Consulting design and innovation expert Dan Toon said, “We had to be extremely sensitive about what this might be like when it’s on the end of your street.
“It’s okay for a red post box because there’s not many of them but imagine there’s a street with four of five of these installed – you wouldn’t want to see a red dominating.
“We know that excellent design has the power to dismantle barriers to growth and simplify the user experience.”
“For chargepoints, this means making the switch to EVs more attractive, accessible, affordable and secure for drivers without negatively impacting pedestrians and other road users.”
