Don’t add a parking fine to your Christmas shopping list
06 December 2021
December is officially upon us, which can only mean that the chaos of Christmas shopping is just on the horizon. But it’s not just your list which you should be checking twice – you may also want to double-check that you’ve paid for parking.
New Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) figures obtained and released by the RAC Foundation show that 159 different private parking companies issued parking tickets to drivers in April and June 2021 - a 64 per cent increase compared with April and June in 2016.
Separate statistics from the government show that 1.95 million tickets, which can cost as much as £100, were issued in shopping centres, leisure facilities and service areas along the motorway during the same period.
If tickets continue to be issued at the same rate for the rest of the financial year, we could see another record-breaking total figure similar to the 8.4 million tickets issued in 2019/20.
So, whether you’re shopping for a turkey, heading to a local carol concert or pantomime production, plan ahead for parking. Some local councils offer free parking in specific locations during the Christmas period, so it may be worth a quick Google search before you head out.
