Bristol City Council prepare to submit final CAZ plans

Bristol City Council are ready to submit their final proposals for a new clean air zone (CAZ) to the government.

The plans were announced earlier in the year (2021) and Bristol City Council are now prepared to officially submit the proposal of introducing a Class D CAZ, which will require drivers of all older, non-compliant, vehicles to pay a daily fee to enter the small zone which will be in the centre of Bristol.

It is expected that more than 71% of vehicles using the zone are already compliant with the emissions standard, and most petrol vehicles newer than 2005 and diesel vehicles newer than 2014 meet the requirements.

Vehicles that do not comply will be charged £9 per day, whilst coaches, HGVs and other large vehicles will be required to pay £100 per day to drive within the CAZ.

To make the transition period easier for the community, those earning less than £24,000 a year and no more than £12.45 per hour will able to apply for an exemption from charges for the first year – and there will also be exemptions for hospital visitors.

Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees said, “We have a moral and legal responsibility to make our air cleaner and the submission of this Full Business Case is a significant intervention to improve public health.

“We recognise that these proposals will impact on individuals and businesses. We’re now calling on the Government to provide the funding needed to help us support these people.

“We’re grateful to the thousands of individuals and businesses who took part in our Clean Air Zone consultation and we want to continue working together on our journey towards a healthier city.”

This news follows announcements by the city councils of Birmingham and Bath on their plans to introduce CAZs in 2021.
