Would you take £3,000 to take your car off the road?

Do you have a diesel car built before 2016 or petrol model built before 2006? If so, you could be paid up to £3,000 in ‘green travel credits’ if you surrender your vehicle.

The scheme, which is targeting the worst polluting vehicles, will be trialled in Coventry beginning this spring (2021) for a two-year period and aims to lower levels of congestion and air pollution by reducing car dependency. 

Motorists who participate in the trial, run by Coventry city council and the West Midlands Combined Authority, will be able to spend the credits, which will be provided on a special payment card, on public transport, bicycles, electric scooters, car clubs and taxis.

Hampshire county council is considering a similar ‘mobility credit scheme’ for residents who agree to no longer own a car. 

Department for Transport figures show that 356.5 billion miles of roads in England and Wales were covered by vehicles in 2019. This is up by 11% from 2014 and 36% since the mid-90s.

West Midlands mayor Andy Street said, “We have a number of candidates lined up in Coventry following a public appeal for volunteers last year and are putting processes in place to allow them to scrap their old cars in exchange for transport credits later this spring.”

AA president Edmund King said that the timing of the initiative was ‘bizarre’ when many car companies such as Jaguar Land Rover have recently committed to going fully electric. He said, “The money would probably be better spent on providing electric charging points for those without off-street parking rather than giving mobility credits for services that people will use when they need to or feel safe to.”
