Police cars could be revolutionised with augmented reality

Police cars could be revolutionised with augmented reality

Transport and connectivity software firm VNC Automotive says that it is already in discussions with police forces to revolutionise police cars and first responder vehicles with augmented reality, mobile surveillance and remote device control features.

These potential new features, which would be integrated into the vehicles’ existing infrastructure, draw on new trends in consumer vehicles and the latest apps from mobile phone platforms.

Philip Handschin, technical consultant at VNC Automotive said, “We’re already seeing a focus on app-based solutions, but there is now a shift towards exploring how technology including remote control functionality, the relaying of remote surveillance footage to a car’s dashboard and even augmented reality. However, all this functionality needs to remain intuitive and easily integrated with the large format touch screens that are becoming commonplace in today’s vehicles.”

VNC Automotive’s technology could enable video feeds from drones or robots to be relayed to the vehicle to support police officers and first responders attending an emergency situation.

The software technology firm’s website says that with the integration of augmented reality and other features, the vehicles will become ‘intelligence gathering hubs’ which will pass first-hand data back to a central command centre, which will enable teams to coordinate more efficiently with each other and with other services.

Additional benefits of adding the potential new features are that police officers could be able to remotely control sirens, cameras and public address systems. The technology also enables users to transmit location information using smartphone technology and operate devices such as laptops from the vehicle’s touchscreen.
