EV range anxiety may be a myth

Whilst ‘range anxiety’ is a key factor preventing many people from making the switch to an electric vehicle (EV), new figures suggest that range anxiety could actually be a myth, with the average EV covering 370 more miles each year than traditional petrol and diesel vehicles.

A recent poll of 7,000 motorists in the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Norway Sweden and Denmark by Nissan revealed that petrol and diesel drivers are travelling around 13,600km (8,451 miles) annually, compared with 14,200km (8,825 miles) travelled by EV drivers.

Interestingly, 47 per cent of these petrol and diesel drivers believed the main advantage of a petrol or diesel car is greater range. Also, 30 per cent said they were unlikely to consider a fully electric vehicle – 58 per cent of whom said the biggest reason for not making the switch is EV range anxiety.

Of the EV drivers polled, 70 per cent said that their experience of range is better than they had expected it would be.

Nissan’s Arnaud Charpentier said, “This research reiterates that electric driving is not only a smart option beneficial to the environment but also a fun, exciting and convenient choice for the owners.

“It is no surprise that people now drive EV further than ICE cars. We are confident that with more EVs on the road dispelling myths, range anxiety will soon be in the past.”
