London ultra-low emission zone to expand from October 2021
03 June 2021
On October 25 2021, the ultra-low emissions zone (ULEZ) in central London will expand to create a larger zone up to, but not including, the North Circular Road (A406) and South Circular Road (A205).
The daily charge of £12.50 for cars, motorcycles, vans and other specialist vehicles (up to and including 3.5 tonnes), and minibuses (up to and including 5 tonnes) will remain – as will the current ULEZ Euro emissions standards which are as follows:
- Euro 3 (NOx) for motorcycles, mopeds, motorised tricycles and quadricycles.
- Euro 4 (NOx) for petrol cars, vans and other specialist vehicles (up to and including 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight) and minibuses (up to and including 5 tonnes).
- Euro 6 (NOx and PM) for diesel cars, vans and other specialist vehicles (up to and including 3.5 tonnes) and minibuses (up to and including 5 tonnes).
Euro emissions standards range from Euro 1 to Euro 6 and describe the oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
According to Transport for London (TfL), four out of five cars already meet the ULEZ Euro emissions standards. You can check if your vehicle is compliant here.
You can also search a location to see if it is within the ULEZ on the TfL website.
The TfL website says that the ULEZ is scheduled for expansion because traffic emissions are still the biggest environmental risk to the health of Londoners and the ULEZ has so far been widely successful in lowering emissions and increasing emission standards compliance.
Since the ULEZ was first implemented in April 2019, the number of vehicles compliant with the emission standard has risen significantly from 39 per cent in February 2017 to more than 80 per cent today.
The ULEZ has also contributed to a 44 per cent reduction in roadside nitrogen dioxide within its boundaries.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said, “I pledge to be the greenest Mayor London’s ever had with a mandate from Londoners to put the environment and climate policies at the heart of my second term in the office. Today I am reaffirming my commitment to speed up the cleaning of London’s toxic air.
“In central London, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has already helped cut toxic roadside nitrogen dioxide pollution by nearly half and led to reductions that are five times greater than the national average.
“But pollution isn’t just a central London problem, which is why expanding the ULEZ later this year will benefit Londoners across the whole city and is a crucial step in London’s green recovery. There is no time to waste. We know pollution hits the poorest Londoners the hardest which is why I’m doing everything I can to improve health for all Londoners.”
