Surrey Police warn against ‘illegal’ 4D licence plates

Surrey Police Roads Policing Unit is warning drivers not to ‘waste money’ on ‘illegal’ 4D licence plates.
Officers tweeted: "Illegal plates seized and removed at the roadside. Driver issued FPN (fixed penalty notice).
"Some (very few) 4D plates would have been legal, but most are not. Our advice is, don’t waste your money and risk a fine."
What are 4D licence plates?
Quite simply, 4D licence plates are exactly what it says on the label – raised, 4D versions of regular licence plates.
According to the driver and vehicle licencing association (DVLA), 4D licence plates are legal if they meet the following requirements:
- The laser-cut characters are manufactured in Charles Wright font and placed onto a printed number plate with the characters underneath the laser-cut acrylic.
- The number plates is printed onto reflective material.
- The components used to manufacture the number plates meet BSAU 145d or BSAU 145e (September 2021).
- The plate has the supplying business outlet name and postcode printed on the number plate.
