Why it's clever to use smart EV charging

Why it's clever to use smart EV charging

Smart charge points communicate with each other, your car and the charging grid. The main benefit of smart charging is optimising grid power and efficiency.

Without smart charging, the grid is at risk of becoming overloaded, which could impact the ability for you to charge your car at certain times and potentially make charging more costly.

How does smart charging work?

The word ‘smart’ generally refers to automation, as is the case for smart EV charging.

When you plug your EV into a smart charger, the charger shares real-time data with its operator. The operator then uses your data to determine the optimal time for your vehicle to charge.

When making this decision, the operator considers factors such as how much electricity is being used in the local area and how many other EVs are charging at that time. This optimisation can save you money with each charge.

If you are in a hurry, you can override this optimisation and ask the charger to begin charging immediately.

Smart charging also reduces charging emissions by up to 22 per cent by avoiding peak hours.
