EV chargepoints confuse 39 per cent of drivers finds the AA Driving School

A recent survey by the AA Driving School found that 39 per cent of drivers would not feel confident in identifying which chargepoint would be compatible for a specific electric vehicle model given and that a further 30 per cent would not feel confident to correctly use a public charger.

Home-charging was determined to be confusing for a further 22 per cent of respondents.

Additionally, 27 per cent admitted to not understanding EV range and 24 per cent to not understanding EV road signs and markings.

The Highway Code was updated last month and now, for the first time, includes guidance on using kerbside electric vehicle chargepoints.

Rule 239 now says, "When using an electric vehicle charge point, you should park close to the charge point and avoid creating a trip hazard for pedestrians from trailing cables.

"Display a warning sign if you can. After using the charge point, you should return charging cables and connectors neatly to minimise the danger to pedestrians and avoid creating an obstacle for other road users."

Though it is a step forward, many industry professionals recognise the need for further updates to the Highway Code to include more EV-specific guidance – particularly with the 2030 deadline for electrification fast approaching.

Interim Managing Director of the AA Driving School Mark Oakley said, “With the ban of new petrol and diesel cars just eight years away, the Highway Code should be updated to reflect the future direction of driving”.
