EV Tip: Use EV-specific tyres to increase range
16 January 2023
A recent poll by tyre manufacturing company Michelin found that 72 per cent of respondents were unaware that using EV-specific tyres could increase battery range by up to 10 per cent.
A secondary benefit of using EV-specific tyres is their longer lifespan compared with standard tyres.
Some tyres have EU labelling which indicated specific qualities such as rolling resistance. Choosing the right tyre for your vehicle, considering your day to day driving habits, could help you to reduce energy consumption.
Although the cost of running an EV is still less than running a petrol or diesel vehicle, it is still helpful to take steps to maximise range.
Michelin also provided the following tips for making the most of your EV battery:
Drive below the speed limit and avoid harsh braking or acceleration. Use ‘eco’ mode, if your vehicle has it.
Use your EV’s regenerative braking function rather than braking manually.
Avoid using the heater where possible. Functions such as climate control, heating, radio and phone charging ports all use extra energy, and should be avoided if they aren’t needed.
Travel lightly. Removing items from your boot or accessories such as roof racks when they’re not needed can help to reduce the amount of energy used when driving your EV.
