Autonomous vehicles could contribute to skyrocketing traffic levels in the future
13 February 2023
A recent report by the Department for Transport has raised concern about potentially skyrocketing congestion levels in the coming years, partly in connection with a large number of autonomous vehicles on the roads.
In the report, the following predictions are noted:
Traffic delays on major roads could rise 85 per cent by 2060.
More than half of cars in the UK could be autonomous by 2047, in addition to a wider adoption of electric cars with self-driving technology.
Travel information supplier Inrix says that drivers currently spend 80 hours a year in traffic on average – a figure which could rise to 156 hours per year in line with the DfT’s predictions.
One way in which autonomous vehicle adoption could affect traffic levels, is by 'increasing the mobility of the elderly and those who do not hold a driving licence', according to the report.
