First EV battery swapping station opened in Europe
19 April 2023
A new ‘power swap station’ has been opened in Denmark.
The station will allow drivers of NIO electric vehicles to swap their drained EV battery for a fully charged one, rather than waiting at a charging point.
The power swap station process is fully autonomous. The vehicle is raised in order for the drained battery to be mechanically unscrewed, removed and replaced with a charged one capable of travelling up to 500km.
The process takes around five minutes, during which time the station continues to charge its stock of batteries at a slow rate in order to minimise battery degradation.
EV battery swapping is not a new concept and there are more than 1,100 power swap stations already in operation worldwide. However, most of these stations are located in China and this will be the first of 100 planned NIO stations in Europe.
NIO aims to have more than 2,300 power swap stations around the world by the end of 2023.
Michael Salomon, interim head of power at NIO Denmark said, "What we're building now is what we call a travel product. We're putting the stations up in between major cities, allowing people that normally drive far. And then, next wave, we'll put them closer to the major cities and traffic hubs, sort of to broaden their perspective a little.”
