Drivers are risking accidents by putting off renewing their glasses prescriptions

Drivers are risking accidents by putting off renewing their glasses prescriptions

Recent data from the Association of Optometrists (AOP) suggests that drivers with poor vision and out of date prescriptions are increasing the risk of road traffic accidents.

A survey found that 62 per cent of drivers were ‘putting off’ a sight test and 36 per cent were relying on an out-of-date prescription.

A further 17 per cent admitted that they have never tried to read a number plate from a distance test their own vision – a practice recommended by the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA).

In response, police forces in Thames Valley, Hampshire and West Midlands have been given the power and equipment to conduct vision tests on the roadside. The test will require a driver who has been pulled over to read a number plate twenty metres away.

If the driver is unable to read the licence plate, the police will be able to request an urgent revocation of the driver’s licence by the DVLA.

The initiative is supported by Brake, the road safety charity and Vision Express.

Police data shows that 3,000 people are killed or injured by drivers with poor vision each year and other research from the Department for Transport (DfT) shows that 42 per cent of accidents involving drivers aged 70 and over are linked to poor vision.

AOP Chief Executive Adam Sampson said, “It's deeply concerning that a 17 year-old who can read a number plate from 20 metres away when they take their driving test, may continue to drive with no further checks for the rest of their life.

“Sight loss can often be gradual, and people may not notice changes that could affect their ability to drive so it's important to remember that regular vision checks are an essential part of helping to stay safe as a driver.”
