The battery electric van market grew by 19.7 per cent year-on-year in May
19 June 2023
New data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that the new van market recorded a fifth consecutive month of growth in May 2023, as supply chain disruptions begin to ease.
Key statistics included:
- 135,296 light commercial vehicle (LCVs) have been registered so far in 2023.
- There were 25,359 new LCV registrations in May (15.3 per cent increase year-on-year, compared with 2022).
- In May, LCVs at the higher end of the weight restriction (2.5 to 3.5 tonnes) represented 67.7 per cent of new van registrations. The 17,173 units registered represent an 8.3 per cent year-on-year increase.
- Registrations of middle-weight vans weighing between 2.0 to 2.5 tonnes rose 57.2 per cent year on year to 4,143.
- Lightweight vans under 2.0 tonnes saw a 42.4 per cent decrease in demand year-on-year with just 469 new vehicles registered in May.
- The battery electric vehicle (BEV) market grew by 19.7 per cent in May with 1,041 new registrations. This means that BEVs represented around 1 in 24 new vans.
SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said, “A van market rebound is an opportunity to deliver an increasingly environmentally sustainable recovery and a boost to the economy. But every lever must be pulled to support the electric switch. With the forthcoming ZEV Mandate, we also need a national plan to deliver public charging infrastructure that encourages plug-in van uptake, to give the UK confidence over what can – and must – be a stable, successful transition for businesses up and down the country.”
