New zero emissions vehicle registrations increase year-on-year
03 January 2024
Figures from the Department for Transport (DfT) show that there were 86,000 zero emission cars registered for the first time in July to September 2023, accounting for 17 per cent of all new car registrations during the quarter (an increase of 42 per cent year on year).
Zero emission vehicle (ZEV) registrations include battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).
Overall, new vehicle registrations were up by 22 per cent in Q3 of 2023 (670,000 registrations). This means that, as of the end of September 2023, there were 41.3 million licensed vehicles in the UK, including 942,000 zero emission vehicles, an increase of 56 per cent compared to the end of September 2022.
Additionally, the latest new car sales data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that of the 24,359 new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) registered by the end of September 2023, more than three in four were adopted by fleets and businesses. This means that fleet and business new car registrations accounted for 56 per cent of the new car market.
The data also shows an uplift in the number of zero emissions light goods vehicles (LGVs) registered in the quarter (5,600), representing 6.2 per cent of all new LGV registrations.
This is positive news for the UK government, which is currently implementing changes and exploring further measures to ease regulations and make it easier for people to drive LGVs and electric vans with less requirement for additional training.
Since July 2018, people with a category B driving licence can also drive alternatively fuelled vehicles up to 4.25 tonnes. The Department for Transport (DfT) also introduced a series of changes in October 2023 for the operation of 4.25-tonne zero emission vans following a Government consultation, including the removal of additional five-hour training requirement for drivers.
