Poor vehicle maintenance contributed to 1,700 road casualties in 2021

The AA has found that defects and poor maintenance contributed to 1,700 road traffic accidents resulting in casualties during 2021. This figure has risen seven per cent compared with 2020.   Faulty brakes were the most common defect and resulted in 740 casualties and 10 fatalities.  Damaged tyres contributed to 491 casualties and 12 fatalities. Faults with steering and vehicle suspension contributed to 255 casualties and 6 fatalities. Penny Stoolman from the AA reminded drivers that MOTs and servicing ‘can be life-saving interventions that... Read full article

Warning issued to ‘rowdy drivers’ as new cameras are set to tackle ‘antisocial driving’

Warning issued to ‘rowdy drivers’ as new cameras are set to tackle ‘antisocial driving’

Bradford, South Gloucestershire, Great Yarmouth, and Birmingham are hosting pilot schemes, backed by the UK government, trialling a new road camera which will identify and track drivers who break the law by excessively revving vehicles’ engines using modified exhausts.  These ‘antisocial driving’ offenders are often referred to as ‘boy racers’.  Aside from causing general disruption, excessive road noise has been found to contribute to health problems such as heart attacks, strokes and dementia. To represent the level of... Read full article

Do you know how the Government’s Autumn Statement will impact your fleet decisions?

Do you know how the Government’s Autumn Statement will impact your fleet decisions?

We understand that you might well be asking if last week's Autumn Statement has created more questions than answers about how you will run your fleet going forward.   What we do know is that the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has just confirmed that the UK is officially in recession. The Government has announced in the Autumn Statement that benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax for electric vehicles (EVs) will continue to be kept low to increase uptake. The Chancellor said he had listened to the fleet industry and will increase company car tax for EVs by 1%... Read full article

Loopholes around driving bans are set to be closed for good

Loopholes around driving bans are set to be closed for good

According to the government's website, you can be disqualified from driving if you build up 12 or more penalty points on your driving licence within a period of 3 years. Furthermore, after a second disqualification, the ban can rise to one year. Then to two years for a third ban.  Despite these rules, it has been discovered by the Ministry of Justice’s Sentencing Council that some courts have been failing to consider the driving history of offenders and instead have been overly lenient in only considering the driver’s most recent... London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone could expand further in 2023

London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone could expand further in 2023

Transport for London is consulting on proposals to further expand London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which could come into force next year on 29 August 2023. The new zone would cover the same area as the current Low Emission Zone, which charges the most heavily polluting vehicles.  Under the proposals, a daily charge of £12.50 would apply to drivers of non-compliant vehicles which enter the zone. This would include residents but would not apply to vehicles which remain parked and are not driven within the zone on that day.  You can... Read full article

Drivers are being advised to book their MOT well in advance

Drivers are being advised to book their MOT well in advance

The AA is urging drivers of vehicle which are due to be MOT tested between now and December to book well in advance. There are more than 10 million cars, vans and minibuses due to be tested during the Autumn period. Penny Stoolman from the AA said, “With household budgets stretched, drivers may be tempted to leave repairs on their car until the last possible moment or wait for the MOT to spot faults.  "But with colder, wetter weather due in the coming months leaving blown bulbs, torn tyres and cracked windscreens unrepaired could cause more damage to... Did you know that you can be fined for making way for an emergency vehicle?

Did you know that you can be fined for making way for an emergency vehicle?

It happens to the best of us – we see flashing ambulance lights in our rear-view mirror, and we panic. In some cases, this panic can cause us to desperately manoeuvre our vehicle out of the way, giving little thought to the safety of the manoeuvre.  Whilst the Highway Code encourages motorists to allow emergency vehicles past such as ambulances, police cars and fire engines, it is also important that drivers do so safely in order to avoid fines. For example, pulling into a bus lane or driving through a red light to move out of the way could result in a... Read full article

Bradford has started its new Class C+ Clean Air Zone

Bradford has started its new Class C+ Clean Air Zone scheme, which will charge non-compliant vans (£7 per day), minibuses (£9 per day), coaches and HGVs (£50 per day). Charges will not apply to passenger cars and motorbikes. According to the Bradford.gov.uk website, charges will apply from midnight to midnight, 7 days per week, all year round.  The new zone is expected to reduce nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by 35 per cent and CO2 by 147,000 tonnes. In light of local businesses and transport operators upgrading to cleaner vehicles in... Read full article

A 1MPH decrease in ‘speed tolerance’ by police could result in a 259% increase in penalties

A 1MPH decrease in ‘speed tolerance’ by police could result in a 259% increase in penalties

Before May 14 2019, police guidelines issued by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) suggested that drivers could get away with exceeding the limit by ten per cent plus 3MPH (for example, in a 20MPH zone you could drive 25MPH without being fined).  These guidelines were updated on May 14 2019 and the tolerance was reduced by 1MPH, meaning that drivers could potentially get away with exceeding the limit by ten per cent plus 2MPH. A report by This is Money found that the 1MPH difference could result in a 259 per cent increase in the... Read full article

The cost of charging an EV is nearing that of fuelling an ICE vehicle

The cost of charging an EV is nearing that of fuelling an ICE vehicle

The cost of charging an electric vehicle when using a public facility has risen by 42 per cent and is nearing the same price as fuelling internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.  According to the RAC, exclusively using rapid or ultra-rapid public EV chargers costs around 18 pence per mile, compared with roughly 19 pence per mile for petrol and 21 pence per mile for diesel. RAC spokesman Simon Williams said, "It remains the case that charging away from home costs less than refuelling a petrol or diesel car, but these figures show that the gap is narrowing...
