Seven airports increase airport terminal drop-off prices

Seven airports increase airport terminal drop-off prices

The summer holidays are almost upon us, which means many families will be flooding to the airport and setting off on trips abroad. But before you volunteer to chauffeur your friends and loved ones to the airport, you should prepare yourself for record-high terminal drop-off prices. According to the RAC, seven of the busiest airports in the UK have increased their prices and an additional one has introduced them for the first time. The biggest change comes from Southampton Airport, which has increased its minimum terminal drop-off prices to £6 for twenty... Read full article

New Public Charge Point Regulations are welcomed by the motoring industry

New Public Charge Point Regulations are welcomed by the motoring industry

The UK government has pushed new Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 which aim to improve the charging experience for electric vehicle drivers. Most notably, the new regulations require rapid chargers to meet a 99 per cent reliability standard. Other requirements include improved reliability, clear pricing, easier payment methods and open, real-time data and status information. All chargers over 8kW will be required to have contactless payments within the next year. Charge point operators (CPOs) will also be required to have third party roaming deals within... Thermal cloak for electric vehicles could improve charging speed and range

Thermal cloak for electric vehicles could improve charging speed and range

Researchers at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China have created a new ‘thermal cloak’ for electric vehicle batteries, designed to keep them warm during the winter and cool during the summer for optimal performance. According to charge point operator Osprey, the lithium-ion batteries in most electric vehicles have an optimum temperature of 20-25 degrees Celsius. This is because the batteries rely on a chemical reaction to store and release electricity, which can be interrupted by high or low temperatures. In cold weather, this chemical reaction is... Fleet managers sought to help deliver new apprenticeship standard for the sector

Fleet managers sought to help deliver new apprenticeship standard for the sector

The Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) is calling for up to twenty experienced fleet managers to work alongside the Institute for Apprenticeships and help deliver a new apprenticeship standard for the fleet sector. The new standard is expected to support a level 3 apprenticeship, equivalent to two A Level passes, which will provide school and college leavers with an entry point into the sector. Project leader and AFP member Matt Neale said, “Once the structure of the apprenticeship is finalised, the trailblazing group need to be ready to recruit... Read full article

New tyre recycling plant will emit 72 per cent less CO2 than traditional recycling methods

New tyre recycling plant will emit 72 per cent less CO2 than traditional recycling methods

Waste management company SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK and tyre pyrolysis specialist Pyrum Innovations AG have revealed their new one-year partnership and plans to create UK’s first tyre recycling plant using pyrolysis technology. It is hoped that this new plant will help to tackle the waste caused by the disposal of more than 50 million tyres in the UK each year. Currently, 13.4million scrap tyres are used for alternative fuel each year and repurposed into material for sports pitches and playgrounds. The remaining amount is sent to landfill. The new... Worst-polluting vehicles to pay double for parking under new payment structures

Worst-polluting vehicles to pay double for parking under new payment structures

Councils throughout the UK are implementing new car parking charges based on vehicle emissions, meaning that those driving the heaviest polluting vehicles could pay double. Several councils in the London area have already implemented these charges, and Lambeth is the latest to do so with 26 different charges for 1 hour of parking. The charge depends on the vehicle’s tax band and diesel surcharge. For example, parking for 1 hour at a bay near Waterloo station can cost between £6.30 and £13.23, depending on the above factors. These emissions-based... Read full article

The Department for Transport is set to fall short of its objectives for increasing active travel

The Department for Transport is set to fall short of its objectives for increasing active travel

The National Audit Office (NAO) recently revealed in a new report that the Department for Transport (DfT) will fall short of three out of its four objectives for increasing active travel by 2025. This comes after the DfT announced in March that it will cut two-thirds of the funding which was to be invested into walking and cycling – a move which is being challenged by the Transport Action Network. In 2020, the UK government promised thousands of miles of new, curb-protected cycleways with the aim of shifting active travel to be the natural choice for people... Read full article

Road safety charity Brake calls for default 20MPH speed limits on urban roads

Road safety charity Brake calls for default 20MPH speed limits on urban roads

Road safety charity Brake is advocating for 20MPH speed limits to be introduced as default on urban roads throughout the UK. Currently, the standard speed limit on this road type is 30MPH. However, a new consensus from road safety professionals says that 20MPH is the maximum safe speed limit in areas where traffic and pedestrians are in close proximity. Whilst local authorities are permitted to introduce 20MPH limits at their own discretion, the requirement for new infrastructure to support these changes, such as new signage, creates a barrier. According to Brake,... Read full article
