Almost 50 per cent of drivers think using a phone while driving is OK

New research from dashcam provider Nextbase reveals that almost 50 per cent of motorists think it’s acceptable to use a mobile phone whilst driving.  An additional 11 per cent believe it’s fine to answer a video call whilst driving, and 7 per cent admitted to using their mobile phone to watch videos such as TV series whilst driving on long journeys. The results of a poll by Fleet News also showed that 42 per cent of drivers were not aware of the recent changes to legislation that came into force on March 25 2022, making any... Read full article

Almost half of drivers surveyed don’t know the legal drink-drive limit

Almost half (42 per cent) of 1,004 drivers surveyed as part of new research commissioned by road safety charity IAM RoadSmart admitted to not knowing the legal drink-drive limit in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.  If we consider this figure respectively of the 35 million people who hold a full UK driving licence, there are potentially 15 million motorists unaware of the legal drink-drive limit.  Of the subjects who answered that they did know the legal drink-drive limit in the UK, 60 per cent answered incorrectly.  This... Cycling laws could soon be updated including fines for speeding

Cycling laws could soon be updated including fines for speeding

Former Transport Secretary Grant Shapps suggested that cyclists should be fined for breaking speed limits in residential areas, just as drivers are, are more 20MPH zones are introduced. He told The Times Newspaper UK, “There is definitely a hard core of cyclists who seem to think the laws of the road don’t apply to them. I do think the Highway Code should be updated to recognise speed limits for cyclists. “How can it be right that some people are able to break the speed limit and bomb through red lights? The time has come to have a look at a... Read full article

TfL to add e-bikes to its Santander Cycles Scheme

To support the popularity of London’s Santander Cycles scheme, which has recorded more than 94 million hires since its launch in July 2010, Transport for London (TfL) and Santander are introducing 500 e-bikes to its fleet. E-bikes are battery-powered to assist the rider. The power supplied by the battery motor is based upon how fast the rider is pedalling and the level of support selected.  The scheme already has 800 docking stations and will be expanding later this year to implement stations in the London Borough of Southwark. Mayor of London Sadiq... Read full article

In light of the current UK HGV driver shortage, the Department for Transport has opened a consultation about changing the law in order for certified car drivers to be able to drive HGVs without requiring an additional test. Respondents to the consultation will, in part, consider whether the government should:  grant drivers who have category B car licence entitlement additional entitlement to category C1 (7.5 tonnes) goods vehicle entitlement and whether to grant drivers who have a category B licence entitlement to a minibus category D1 licence. raise the... Transport Secretary Grant Shapps calls for ‘death by dangerous cycling’ law

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps calls for ‘death by dangerous cycling’ law

It seems that for many, cycling is an attractive option for short journeys. Recent research from GoCompare found the average person in England, Scotland and Wales could save £106.60 per month by cycling, a figure which could increase given the currently rising cost of fuel and reduce their carbon output by 5kg per day. This combined with the fact that 71 per cent of car journeys made in the UK are less than five miles in distance, making cycling a viable alternative. According to Sky News, new figures show that during the five months to the end of July,... Read full article

The Private Parking Code of Practice has been withdrawn

The Private Parking Code of Practice has been withdrawn

The Private Parking Code of Practice, which formed part of a government plan to reduce maximum private parking fines from £100 to £50 (except for those who parked in Blue Badge bays without a badge), create a fairer appeal system and providing a grace period for lateness in paying fines, has been withdrawn.  The withdrawal will be temporary and is ‘pending review of the levels of private parking charges and additional fees’ according to the government website.  RAC head of roads policy Nicholas Lyes commented on the... Tailgating is the most distracting factor whilst driving according to a new survey

Road safety charity IAM RoadSmart recently commissioned a survey of 1,000 motorists in which 30 per cent deemed tailgating to be the most distracting factor whilst driving. The research comes after National Highways recently revealed that tailgating is a factor in 1 in 8 crashes on its road network.   Driving with children or other passengers in the vehicle came in at a close second, with 26 per cent of respondents siting this as the most distracting factor.  You can see the full chart of results on the IAM RoadSmart...
