Drivers exceed speed limits on country roads more than any other road type

More deaths occur on country roads than any other road type in the UK, yet 48 per cent of drivers admit to breaking the 60mph speed limit. This figure is based on data from a survey of 3,102 motorists which appeared in the RAC Report on Motoring and a four per cent rise compared with 2021. Other key statistics from the report include: Eight per cent confessed to having broken speed limits on country roads this frequently. Forty per cent admitted to breaking the 60mph speed limit occasionally on up to half of journeys on country roads. There was a total of... Read full article

What are those black dots on my windscreen?

What are those black dots on my windscreen?

Have you ever checked your rear-view mirror and thought, ‘what on earth are those black dots on my windscreen?’ As it turns out, they actually serve an important safety purpose. According to windscreen repair company Autoglaze, the black dots (which are actually called a dot matrix) help to distribute temperature evenly to reduce optical distortion or lensing. The company explained on Reddit that this happens when the solid black band (known as the frit band) heats up faster than the windscreen glass, creating an ‘optical distortion’ that... Sat nav brands could change algorithms to divert drivers away from residential roads

Sat nav brands could change algorithms to divert drivers away from residential roads

Sat nav brand TomTom has expressed that the industry plans to adjust algorithms to prevent disruptive ‘rat running’ in local neighbourhoods. Rat running refers to the practice of avoiding traffic by taking shortcuts through residential roads. TomTom Vice President Ralf-Peter Schaefer said that updating sat nav software to direct drivers to main roads rather than local ones would 'protect people in neighbourhoods from noise and emissions' and although there are no confirmed plans yet, the company is in discussion with the European Commission. If... Read full article

20MPH speed limits in London reduce fatalities without adding to congestion, says TfL

20MPH speed limits in London reduce fatalities without adding to congestion, says TfL

Figures from Transport for London (TfL) show that road traffic accidents resulting in fatalities and serious injuries reduced by 25 per cent on roads with speed limits reduced to 20mph. The data was collected from sites within the London Congestion Charging zone on the TfL Road Network (TLRN). The speed limits on these roads were reduced to 20mph in March 2020 as part of TfL’s ‘Vision Zero’ commitment to eliminate death and serious injury on London roads by 2041. Other key statistics include: Collisions involving vulnerable road users also... Read full article

London has more EV charging points than three other major UK cities combined

The latest set of electric charger figures from the government reveals a large disparity in infrastructure between London and the rest of the UK. Analysis of the data by The Telegraph found that the London Borough of Westminster alone has more EV charging points (1,832) than Birmingham (429), Manchester (158) and Newcastle (152) combined. Central London also has 893 chargers per 100,000 people, making charging availability 18 times better than in Leeds, and 28 times more than in Bristol. As a whole, London has an average of 131 electric vehicle... Read full article

Can you identify what’s under your car bonnet?

Can you identify what’s under your car bonnet?

Whilst many of us are guilty of occasionally ignoring dashboard warning lights, it’s important to know what’s under your bonnet, and how to carry out basic maintenance on your vehicle. A concerning survey of 2,000 motorists by breakdown assistance provider Green Flag found that more than a quarter of respondents were unable to identify common engine parts. Other findings include: One third didn’t know how to top up their car’s screenwash. One in five were unable to identify the dipstick used to check oil levels. 50 per cent were unable... One in ten drivers ignore red X signs on smart motorways

The emergency services and National Highways recently reminded drivers about the importance of responding to red X signs on smart motorways, after it was discovered that one in ten ignore them. The red X sign is used to close a lane in which an obstruction is detected by cameras, such as a broken-down vehicle. Failure to move out of a lane displaying a red X sign can result in fine of up to £100 and three penalty points added to your driving licence. In some cases, more severe fine penalties or court appearances can be enforced. The cameras are able to detect... Read full article

Autonomous vehicles could contribute to skyrocketing traffic levels in the future

A recent report by the Department for Transport has raised concern about potentially skyrocketing congestion levels in the coming years, partly in connection with a large number of autonomous vehicles on the roads. In the report, the following predictions are noted: Traffic delays on major roads could rise 85 per cent by 2060. More than half of cars in the UK could be autonomous by 2047, in addition to a wider adoption of electric cars with self-driving technology. Travel information supplier Inrix says that drivers currently spend 80 hours a year in traffic on... Read full article

Some councils are set to increase parking charges by as much as 43 per cent

The annual local authority budget process is under way, and some councils have already indicated their plans to significantly raise parking charges, amongst other service fees. These councils include those in York, Southend, Thanet, Rutland and the London Borough of Waltham Forest – all of which are set to increase charges by around 10 per cent from April 2023. Some will also extend charging times later into the evening and begin charging at parking sites which are currently free to use. The most significant rises include: Parking charges enforced by...
