The Department for Transport is set to fall short of its objectives for increasing active travel

The Department for Transport is set to fall short of its objectives for increasing active travel

The National Audit Office (NAO) recently revealed in a new report that the Department for Transport (DfT) will fall short of three out of its four objectives for increasing active travel by 2025. This comes after the DfT announced in March that it will cut two-thirds of the funding which was to be invested into walking and cycling – a move which is being challenged by the Transport Action Network. In 2020, the UK government promised thousands of miles of new, curb-protected cycleways with the aim of shifting active travel to be the natural choice for people... Read full article

Road safety charity Brake calls for default 20MPH speed limits on urban roads

Road safety charity Brake is advocating for 20MPH speed limits to be introduced as default on urban roads throughout the UK. Currently, the standard speed limit on this road type is 30MPH. However, a new consensus from road safety professionals says that 20MPH is the maximum safe speed limit in areas where traffic and pedestrians are in close proximity. Whilst local authorities are permitted to introduce 20MPH limits at their own discretion, the requirement for new infrastructure to support these changes, such as new signage, creates a barrier. According to Brake,... Read full article

9,000 drivers were caught drink and drug driving during police crackdown last year

Figures from National Police Chiefs’ Council show that almost 9,000 drivers were caught drink and drug-driving in the Operation Limit campaign which took place throughout the UK between 21 November 2022 and 1 January 2023. During the campaign, 52,667 drivers were breath tested at the roadside and 10.2 per cent failed or refused to take the test. Officers also conducted 6,273 drug wipe tests, of which 53.6 per cent came back positive. Interestingly, it was noted that 79 per cent of offenders caught were male and 77 per cent were over the age of... Read full article

The gap between electric vehicles and charge points has more than doubled in some regions

The gap between electric vehicles and charge points has more than doubled in some regions

The gap between the number of plug-in vehicles on UK roads and public charger availability increased year on year between 2021 and 2022. In some regions, the number of plug-in vehicles per public charger has more than doubled and the gap widened in all but one region in 2022. The figures, obtained by The Times Newspaper, show that on average there were 36 electric cars on the road to every standard public charger last year, compared with 31 at the end of 2021. Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveal the number of plug-in vehicles per standard... Read full article

The AFP says that 4.25 tonne van restrictions are hindering electric van uptake in fleets

The AFP says that 4.25 tonne van restrictions are hindering electric van uptake in fleets

The Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) has highlighted that restrictions applying to 4.25 tonne vans are hindering electric van adoption within fleets, despite the fact that a special concession was created by the Department of Transport for electric light commercial vehicles (LCVs) in 2019. This concession means that standard B licence holders are now able to drive electric LCVs weighing up to 4.25 tonnes, as opposed to the original weight limit of 3.5 tonnes, to allow for heavy EV batteries. However, many of the AFP’s fleet members are reporting that,... Read full article

The majority of drivers regularly break the law according to the DfT

According to the DfT, the majority of drivers ‘regularly’ break the law and in 2021, 51 per cent of cars exceeded the speed limit on 30 MPH roads. Other analysis included: The number of speeding offences has risen by around 60 per cent over the past decade. Prosecutions increased by 18 per cent in 2021 alone (245,000). There were...
