Level 2 autonomous vehicle technology to be made available for the first time in the UK

The UK has taken another step forward on its journey to embracing self-driving cars, as the government has approved a driving-assist feature which will allow motorists to take their hands off the wheel. The feature, called the BlueCruise system, is available with the Ford Mustang Mach-E model and allows the vehicle to steer, brake and accelerate using radar and cameras to track road markings and other vehicles. However, the driver is still required to pay attention to the road and the system uses an infrared camera to monitor the driver and ensure their eyes are on... Read full article

Self-driving bus service beginning in Scotland this month

Stagecoach will begin what is believed by the UK government to be the world’s first self-driving bus service over the Forth Road bridge in Scotland on May 15 2023. The service will run between the Ferrytoll Park and Ride Fife and the Edinburgh Park train and tram exchange. The route is 14 miles in total. The fleet will be comprised of five single-decker buses which will be able to travel on pre-selected routes at speeds of up to 50mph and, although the vehicles are self-driving, a ‘safety driver’ will be onboard to monitor the autonomous technology.... First EV battery swapping station opened in Europe

First EV battery swapping station opened in Europe

A new ‘power swap station’ has been opened in Denmark. The station will allow drivers of NIO electric vehicles to swap their drained EV battery for a fully charged one, rather than waiting at a charging point. The power swap station process is fully autonomous. The vehicle is raised in order for the drained battery to be mechanically unscrewed, removed and replaced with a charged one capable of travelling up to 500km. The process takes around five minutes, during which time the station continues to charge its stock of batteries at a slow rate in order... Read full article

One in five roads will be undriveable within the next 15 years

A new document by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA), the Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (ALARM) survey, reports that one in five roads (37,000 miles) have so much road surface damage that they will be undriveable within five years. It has been estimated that about £14 billion is needed to repair all road surface damage England and Wales. This means that our roads have suffered an additional £2 billion in damage since last year’s estimate. There is now concern within the motoring industry that the government’s pledged £700... Testing drug-driving suspects is putting additional strain on the NHS

Road safety charity IAM RoadSmart recently published a new annual Safety Culture report which says that drug-driving is at an all-time high with a 260 per cent increase in offences over the past decade. The reports says that drug driving is adding pressure to A&E departments throughout the country which are already incredibly busy. Responses to an accompanying survey by IAM RoadSmart were also quite worrying. Findings included: 1-in-10 people saying they have driven or been a passenger in a vehicle where the driver has been under the influence of illegal... Read full article

Drivers are risking accidents by putting off renewing their glasses prescriptions

Drivers are risking accidents by putting off renewing their glasses prescriptions

Recent data from the Association of Optometrists (AOP) suggests that drivers with poor vision and out of date prescriptions are increasing the risk of road traffic accidents. A survey found that 62 per cent of drivers were ‘putting off’ a sight test and 36 per cent were relying on an out-of-date prescription. A further 17 per cent admitted that they have never tried to read a number plate from a distance test their own vision – a practice recommended by the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA). In response, police forces in Thames Valley,... Read full article

Almost 700,000 drivers to be affected by the London ULEZ expansion

The Ultra Low Emission Zone in London will expand across the whole of Greater London this summer, and it has been estimated that nearly 700,000 car drivers will be affected. The expansion, taking place on August 29 2023, means that 691,559 cars (and 851,065 vehicles in total) which do not meet the ULEZ emissions standards will be charged a daily fee of £12.50 to drive within the new zone. These figures represent 9.5 per cent of all vehicles within Greater London, as it was estimated by Transport for London (TfL) that 90.5 per cent of vehicles in the area are... Read full article
