The performance of stopped vehicle detection technology on smart motorways has been flagged in a new report

A safety report by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has flagged the Stopped Vehicle Detection (SVD) technology used on all lane running (ALR) smart motorways. Although the technology was put in place on all ALR smart motorways six months ahead of the deadline, as of the end of September 2022, the OPR report says that the performance of these systems falls short of requirements. These shortfalls include a significantly higher false detection rate than the standard allows. Performance of the technology was noted to range between 63.8 per cent and 83.5 per cent... Driving with worn tyres could impact your driving even more than drinking alcohol

Driving with worn tyres could impact your driving even more than drinking alcohol

Research commissioned by Halfords found that cars with worn tyres at the legal limit of 1.6mm tread depth could increase the braking distance of a vehicle by a third, compared with cars which have tyres in ‘good condition’ of over 4mm tread depth.   This means that driving with worn tyres in winter conditions could be even more dangerous than drink driving which, according to the same study, increases reaction time by 18% or 120 milliseconds. Halfords CEO Graham Stapleton commented that these results demonstrate that the current legal limit for... Read full article

Better use of location data is the key to improving the EV charging network, says The Geospatial Commission

Better use of location data is the key to improving the EV charging network, says The Geospatial Commission

The Geospatial Commission recently published a report outlining how better use of location data can help build a network of electric vehicle chargepoints and overcome the following challenges: ‘Modelling future demand. Demand modelling can provide planners with data-driven evidence to identify how many and what types of chargepoints need to go where and by when, taking into account local needs.’ ‘Finding suitable sites. Improved access to more granular data about energy capacity and physical constraints can support planners to identify the... Are you distracted by loud music whilst driving?

Road safety charity IAM RoadSmart has discovered that 69 per cent of drivers responding to a survey believe that loud music can be distracting, despite nearly 89 per cent stating they listen to music while driving. If you have ever found yourself turning down the radio to better concentrate on manoeuvring or finding a parking space - as 62 per cent of the survey respondents admitted to – then these statistics may come as no surprise. These findings correspond with the latest statistics from the Department for Transport’s (DfT), which show that drivers... Read full article

Electrification and recession will be the key fleet issues of 2023, says AFP

Electrification and recession will be the key fleet issues of 2023, says AFP

The Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) predicts that ‘electrification’ and ‘the impact of the recession’ will be the key fleet issues of 2023, with businesses looking to their fleet managers to deliver more value than ever, particularly in terms of cost control and carbon savings. AFP Chair Paul Hollick raised the point that high petrol and diesel prices and the impending fuel duty increase will make electrification more financially attractive than ever. However, he also added that vehicle supply is likely to remain poor in 2023, affecting... Read full article

Last year was the most dangerous year on record for driving

The Ministry of Justice has revealed that 2021 was the most dangerous year on record for driving. Last year, cases of drunk and drug driving both hit new all-time highs at 33,742 cases and 27,962 cases respectively. The rise in these figures mirror a 7 per cent year on year rise in road accident fatalities (1,558) during 2021. Other significant figures from 2021 relating to England and Wales include: 75,159 drink and drug driving offences successfully prosecuted (on average 206 a day). 5,951 dangerous driving convictions - the highest level since 2011. French car parks will be required to install solar panels in the next 3-5 years

In 2019, a French court ordered its Government to ‘repair’ the country’s emissions shortcomings between 2015 and 2018 by then end of 2022. With the deadline now looming, the French Senate has approved a bill which requires car parks with 80 or more parking spaces to install solar panels covering at least half the area of the car park itself. Car parks with 80-400 spaces has been set a deadline of five years (as of July 2023) to install solar panels, and those with more than 400 spaces have been set a deadline of three years from the same... Almost half of drivers have been fined for speeding before

Data obtained by Confused.com through a Freedom of Information request to UK police found that: £45.7 million worth of fines are handed out to UK drivers each year. 1.74 million speeding offences were recorded over a 12-month period. 49,000 of those speeding offences were captured by one camera on the A40 – a figure which is more than double that of any other camera in the UK over the same period. Two of the most successful speed cameras are located at Junction 19 on the M4 and between junctions 19 and 20. Further research found that almost half of all... Read full article

20MPH speed limits have ‘little impact’ on road safety, says new study

20MPH speed limits have ‘little impact’ on road safety, says new study

Reducing speed limits from 30MPH to 20MPH has had ‘little impact’ on road safety, according to new research by Queen’s University Belfast, Edinburgh University, and the University of Cambridge. The three-year study, which involved implementing 20MPH speed limits on 76 roads in Belfast, found that although there was no notable improvement in road safety, the volume of traffic in those areas reduced, with 166 fewer vehicles per week observed during the morning rush hour after the new speed limits were introduced. This conflicts with data from The... Read full article
