Could communication be the key to improving road safety?

Could communication be the key to improving road safety?

DriveTech has released a new whitepaper, The Global Language of Road Safety and Why it Matters’, which highlights road safety issues in the UK and aims to “inspire widespread thinking” about the language used to communicate road safety. The report offers practical advice on how to reduce driving risk within a business and provides clear points for a successful driving for work policy.  The World Health Organisation (WHO) have found that 1.35 million fatalities occur across the globe each year as a result of road traffic collisions.... Bristol City Council prepare to submit final CAZ plans

Bristol City Council prepare to submit final CAZ plans

Bristol City Council are ready to submit their final proposals for a new clean air zone (CAZ) to the government.  The plans were announced earlier in the year (2021) and Bristol City Council are now prepared to officially submit the proposal of introducing a Class D CAZ, which will require drivers of all older, non-compliant, vehicles to pay a daily fee to enter the small zone which will be in the centre of Bristol. It is expected that more than 71% of vehicles using the zone are already compliant with the emissions standard, and most petrol vehicles... Read full article

Electric car ownership has increased by 50% in the last year

As reported by The Times, the RAC has found that there were more than 300,000 new privately owned electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK at the end of 2020, compared with the same period in 2019.  The RAC’s analysis of data by the Department for Transport (DfT) found that the number of privately owned EVs in the UK grew from 56,000 in 2019 to 86,000 in 2020. Despite the fact that there is now a total of 213,000 EVs in the UK, 86,000 of which are privately owned, the RAC has warned that this is still only a small percentage of the total 32 million cars in... PACTS: Drink and drug driving – the tip of an iceberg?

PACTS: Drink and drug driving – the tip of an iceberg?

The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) has published a new report ‘Drink driving – the tip of an iceberg?’ urging the UK government to review their approach to tackling drug driving.  The report found that law enforcement bodies across the UK have drastically different approached to tackling the issue of drug driving. In some cases, the high cost and time needed to conduct blood testing is resulting in police using it only in some cases, instead of as a routine roadside test. The report details that a... Increased fuel duty has been cancelled in the budget

Increased fuel duty has been cancelled in the budget

Increased fuel duty, due to take effect next month (April), has been cancelled by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in the Budget 2021.  The Treasury says this could be the last time fleets can expect a freeze in fuel duty and that future rates will be decided taking into consideration the UK’s commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The one-year freeze in fuel duty from 2021-22 will cost the Treasury £795m, rising to £885m the year after (2022-23), £910m in 2023-24, £925m in 2024-25 and £945m in 2025-26.  There was no... The Transport Committee is investigating the safety of Smart Motorways

The Transport Committee is investigating the safety of Smart Motorways

Earlier this year (2021) Transport Secretary Grant Schapps expressed his discontent with the expansion scheme for smart motorways to MPs and now The Transport Committee has launched an inquiry, investigating how safe they really are.  At the time, the Transport Secretary said, “What I commit to is making sure that the motorways we have in this country are safer than the motorways that came before them. That is the commitment I make. To be robust and clear from the evidence of, sadly, how many people die on our motorways, they are the safest form of... Read full article

Would you take £3,000 to take your car off the road?

Would you take £3,000 to take your car off the road?

Do you have a diesel car built before 2016 or petrol model built before 2006? If so, you could be paid up to £3,000 in ‘green travel credits’ if you surrender your vehicle. The scheme, which is targeting the worst polluting vehicles, will be trialled in Coventry beginning this spring (2021) for a two-year period and aims to lower levels of congestion and air pollution by reducing car dependency.  Motorists who participate in the trial, run by Coventry city council and the West Midlands Combined Authority, will be able to spend... AFP publishes EV ‘mythbusters’ document

The electric vehicle (EV) committee for The Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) has published a new ‘mythbusters’ document designed to break company car driver misconceptions about electric vehicles (EVs). The document, which is now available on the AFP website for members to download, provides clarity around paying for a charge point, grid capacity, clean air zone charges and EV safety. Chair of the AFP Paul Hollick said, “EVs are being introduced apace in many organisations and fleet managers are finding that potential drivers have... Read full article

Highways England could be found responsible for smart motorway tragedy

Highways England could be found responsible for smart motorway tragedy

A Doncaster coroner has asked the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to consider charging Highways England with corporate manslaughter, following a fatal accident on a stretch of smart motorway.  Nargis Begum was killed in September 2018, in a collision on the M1 in South Yorkshire, when another vehicle collided with her husband’s car which had broken down.  At the time of the collision, Nargis Begum had already exited the broken-down car, which was stranded in a live lane, 16 minutes prior and had been waiting for assistance for a further 6 minutes....
